In support of the strategic plan, the Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters (GCRC) competition was jointly created by the Vice-President Research & Innovation and the Provost & Vice-President Academic to enable the formation and growth of interdisciplinary clusters of research excellence.

Research clusters are interdisciplinary networks of researchers focused on solving key challenges facing society that transcend the traditional boundaries associated with departments, institutions and funding agencies.

A total of 84 applications were received for the 2018 competition and 27 Research Excellence Clusters were funded. The complete list of funded clusters can be found on the VPRI website.
