I think sometimes it has been successful and other times it is just a monolithic machine.

On the balance, there is still much work to be done in this area. The effort is there, but if the university wants to make an enormous step towards community, it could start by offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to become producers and co-producers of food. In the Okanagan, for instance, where the diversity issue has not progressed as far as in Vancouver, apples lie in fields for lack of takers, and the farms are for sale, but the university community barely knows of their existence.

While very noble, this engagement requires staff and resources and can dilute research and teaching.
